Addressing the Skills Gap for Sustainable Economic Growth

Our belief at Heran Group is that Africa has every opportunity to become economically sustainable. All it takes is everyone working together to transform our economies – from CEOs to laborers and teachers to everyday members of society.

At the very foundation of this transformation is talent – our people – and the need for impactful employment. This is near and dear to us at Heran Group, where we work to create meaningful employment opportunities in sectors like general trading, manufacturing and infrastructure development.

Everything we do is for the benefit of local communities and the people who reside in them, and we firmly believe in putting the right processes in place for long-term career development.

Importance of education

Before we can talk about retention and longevity, it is paramount that we address the education of our youth. The current skills shortage across our continent is in large part due to the lack of access to quality education. It is noted that, in Africa, nearly a quarter of the children enrolled at the primary level do not complete their education, and less than 50% complete lower secondary education. As such, the majority of young people entering the workforce do so without the skill sets needed to succeed long-term.

This should serve as a call for improvement to lift Africans up so they are in a prime position to achieve economic stability. Through education and ongoing training, we are able to create more meaningful jobs that entice skilled workers to stay and contribute to our local economies.

First comes education, then impactful employment

Operating across sectors and countries offers us the ability to give young people more job opportunities. It’s an investment we continue to make at Heran Group, especially through our manufacturing and trade-related projects. We are headquartered in Dubai and are active in South Sudan, Kenya and Angola, employing and helping more than 500 people reach their dreams.

We are fortunate to have the ability to operate across borders, but for those who aren’t able to do the same, there are other ways to create meaningful employment opportunities. One way is to simultaneously invest in human capital and innovation. However, companies are encouraged to find the right balance. While technology is the way of the future, without the right people to complement what technology can bring to the table, it’s all for naught.

Just as primary education is critical to long-term success, so too is ongoing training – especially when technology is involved. Training and development will help to ensure companies are maximizing their investment in technology, but it will also motivate employees by helping them realize that they are part of something bigger – something that has the transformative power to truly make an impact.

When it comes to retaining a skilled workforce, motivation plays a big role. There are a few ways that companies can ensure their talent remains motivated, committed, and happy. These include:

– Offering flexible work arrangements
– Designing jobs that play to employees’ strengths
– Investing in employee well-being
– Keeping lines of communication open

In addition, especially when dealing with technology, it is important to involve employees in broader conversations regarding how technology is fueling productivity. Measuring impact by consulting with those who have first-hand experience ensures employees feel heard, and again, part of something bigger.

Creating meaningful employment is all about making a difference and setting young Africans up for success. By doing so, we all have an opportunity to strengthen our local economies and directly benefit local communities. Who’s with us?

Inc.Africa: Sustainable Economic Development is Possible for Africa

Founder and CEO of Heran Group, Isayas Desale Berhe, believes that companies, entrepreneurs and social changemakers need to work together to transform Africa’s economies. This rests on the need to create employment opportunities and to drive impact in the communities they serve.

One such example is his company, which focuses on infrastructure development and international trading. It creates employment opportunities in manufacturing, agriculture, real estate development and hospitality sectors.

This isn’t easy, especially because of the state of the global economy. Read more in Inc.Africa.

Vision Statement: A message from Heran Group’s founder

“Africa’s time has come”: A message from the Heran Group’s founder

As even the most cursory glance at news headlines will attest, we are living through a period of immense uncertainty, unpredictability and upheaval. But while the challenges faced by Africa – and the world – are both manifold and complex, none of them are insurmountable. And, while change can be unnerving, I believe this time also offers abundant promise, opportunity and the potential for transformative growth.

The launch of the Heran Group’s refreshed visual identity and new website offers the ideal opportunity to reflect on our journey so far, and the exciting vision of what’s to come.

I founded Heran Group as a family business with the core value of empowering people to achieve more and rise up to new challenges. We have an extensive track record of success in pursuing opportunities in markets with high growth and potential—for example, in Angola, Kenya and South Sudan.

Our expertise lies in successfully navigating vibrant but sometimes volatile economies—often through partnerships that are innovative and strategic in nature.

Hard-won experience, grit and commitment to quality continue to yield stellar returns on sustainable investments across various lines of business and industries including manufacturing, real estate development, hospitality and trade.

Working together with companies, forward-thinking entrepreneurs and social changemakers, we are uplifting African economies by creating employment opportunities and driving an impact in the communities we serve.

For me, two significant factors can be attributed to our ongoing success:

  • We deliver affordable, great-value products and services with the utmost professionalism, consistency and reliability
  • We develop trust-based relationships with our customers and partners that unlock mutual success and growth over the long-term

We believe in victories that offer a win-win. In empowerment, instead of exploitation. We don’t believe in making a quick buck — we’re in it for the long haul, catalyzing growth that is sustainable, lasting and beneficial for all.

The remainder of 2023 will doubtless be just as eventful as previous years. That is to be celebrated, not feared. At Heran, we will continue to act nimbly, determinedly, and responsibly in all aspects of our diverse businesses. Building on our prior successes, we will boldly identify opportunities, nurture partnerships and forge new paths. Our company’s growth and success are inextricably intertwined with the growth and success of the African continent. Every day we are inspired by its people and their potential. I know that, by working together, Africa stands to emerge stronger and more prosperous than ever before.

Heran Group Refreshes Brand, Ushers in New Era for Sustainable Economic Development in Africa

Africa-focused Company is Positioned to Have Greater Impact on the Continent’s Infrastructure Development and Trading

DUBAI // October 17, 2023 — Heran Group, an infrastructure development and international trading company operating in Africa that delivers manufacturing, real estate development and hospitality projects, and fosters international and regional trade, today revealed its new visual identity including a new website. The new logo and website position the company as a leader in African development and a partner for international businesses looking to invest in the continent.

The new direction coincides with a fresh outlook on the great potential of African business and people. The brand identity conveys trust with clean lines in the updated logo and bright, friendly vector graphics, which were infused with a deliberate nod to indigenous African flora and imagery. It is used to align with the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility in all of its development projects.

“Our new visual identity reflects our long-term vision and commitment to building a prosperous future of Africa through sustainable economic growth,” said Isayas Desale Berhe, CEO of Heran Group. “We’ve updated our brand that represents our optimistic point of view to attract investment and meet the needs of African nations, business and people through manufacturing, trade and infrastructure development. We’re excited to unveil our new identity to the public for the first time and highlight our continued growth momentum.”

The company’s momentum has been steadily building with substantial growth over the past year. Heran Group has expanded its operations and deepened its business in several areas including real estate and manufacturing. Here are a few highlights:

Radisson Blu Hotel Juba opens in South Sudan

As part of the company’s hospitality enterprises, Heran Group helped establish the first 5-star hotel in South Sudan by opening the Radisson Blu Hotel in Juba, which is the fast-growing capital and largest city in the country. The hotel offers 154 bright and contemporary rooms and suites with views of either the pool, the city, or the famed White Nile River.

Angolan expansion

Heran Group’s manufacturing warehouse in Angola that produces baby diapers and paper goods now employs more than 200 people and has expanded to offer a new brand of diapers under the name called Nannies. This brand is now offered under the P&G Africa catalog. In 2023, Heran Group added high-tech equipment to manufacture a new line of tissue paper with 100TD capacity with an expectation to start the operations in the second quarter of 2024.

Heran Group started a new line of construction business in 2023 in a joint venture with one of the biggest construction companies in the country, which aligns with its objective of sustainable development and infrastructure growth. The company also broke ground on a new pharmaceutical manufacturing warehouse, which is set to open in January 2024.

Berhe added: “I founded the Heran Group as a family business with the core value of empowering people to achieve more and rise up to new challenges. Building on our prior successes, we will boldly identify opportunities, nurture partnerships and forge new paths. Working together with companies, forward-thinking entrepreneurs, social change makers and other national leaders, we are uplifting African economies by creating employment opportunities and driving an impact in the communities we serve. I know that, by working together, Africa stands to emerge stronger and more prosperous than ever before.”
